Beth Sederstrom is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from Hinckley, Minnesota. Learning the basics of music at an early age on piano, she started playing flute in 5th grade before joining her school’s various jazz bands on saxophone in junior high. During her time at Northwestern College earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music, she played in their symphonic band, jazz band and symphonette as well as singing in the concert choir. She also played flute and piccolo in the Iowa Collegiate Band and the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
Beth moved to Maui in 2002 and went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology. Her interest in traditional music around the world took her to Scotland in 2006 where she worked with local musicians and furthered her education with a Master of Science in Celtic and Scottish Studies. Beth balanced her love of world music with her classical music training by playing numerous instruments with the Central Band of the Royal British Legion Scotland and The Inch Community Centre Saxophone Ensemble. She also had the honor of singing with the Edinburgh Police Choir and the Lothian and Borders Police Choir.
During her time in Scotland, Beth also discovered her love for playing for musical theater. She has played a variety of different instruments for 25 different shows. Since moving back to Maui in 2016, these shows have included productions with Maui Onstage, MAPA, Seabury Hall and the Maui Chamber Orchestra’s Musicals on Stage series. When she is not traveling around the world working with traditional musicians and learning about their cultures, she plays with the Chop Suey Jazz Orchestra, Maui Pops Orchestra, and the Maui Community Band.
