Bassist Marcus Johnson hails from Wisconsin. After many years based in California, he made Maui his home in 1984. In over forty years as a bassist, he has performed, recorded and toured with countless jazz luminaries, including George Benson, Jon Hendricks, Tom Scott, David Benoit, Howard Roberts, Joanne Brackeen, Emil Richards, Danny Gottlieb, Larry Coryell, John Handy, Art Lande, Narada Michael Walden, Lenny Castro, Tom Malone, Lou Marini, Peter Sprague, and many more. He has also performed and recorded with a wide variety of popular artists, ranging from Willie Nelson to Michael Buble to the Fifth Dimension, and too much more to name. He has recorded with a who’s who list of many of Hawaiian music’s greatest artists; most notably extensive touring and recording work Amy Hanaiali’i and Willie K. He was a co-founder of the popular jazz group Gypsy Pacific. His work on upright and electric basses spans many different genres, from straight up jazz, to classical and show orchestras, commercial tv, movie, and radio work, popular/dance bands, and anything else that presents itself. He stays busy on his island home and abroad with a wide variety of live and recorded performances, as well as a teacher, arranger, and producer.
